Top Girl or La déformation professionnelle/ Top Girl oder La déformation professionnelle, 2014
Director: Tatjana Turanskyj
Color, 94’, Pro Ress 422
Tatjana Turanskyj, who was in Istanbul four years ago for the “Brand New Films from Germany” program with "The Drifters" (Eine flexible Frau), the first film of her “Women and Men” trilogy, is now back with “Top Girl or La déformation professionnelle”, the second film of the series. Premiering in the Forum section of this year’s Berlinale, "Top Girl" revolves around the theme of prostitution. Helena, not having attained the success she was hoping for as an actress, makes a living as an escort in the sex industry. Just as her own mother had neglected her, Helena is not spending enough time with her daughter, spending it instead in pursuit of costumes to fulfill the fantasies of her clients or attending unsuccessful auditions. As inspiration for shooting "Top Girl", Turanskyj cites Godard's "Vivre sa vie", Chantal Akerman's "Jeanne Dielman" and Lizzie Borden's "Working Girls"; occasionally straying from a classical narrative approach, she presents us with a provocative film pondering feminism and body politics.
