THE ETERNAL DAUGHTER, 2022
USA, United Kingdom | DCP, Color, 96'| English
Director: Joanna Hogg
Cast: Tilda Swinton, Carly-Sophia Davies, August Joshi
In the third film of her “Souvenir” series, British director Joanna Hogg explores a mother-daughter relationship. Julie, who is 50 years-old, takes her mother, Rosalind, on a brief vacation to a grand but secluded hotel in Wales to celebrate her birthday. While Julie endeavors to create a film about her mother, we primarily observe them choosing meals in the hotel restaurant or walking their dogs. As this narrative unravels, subtly portraying the indescribable love and seemingly insurmountable differences in character and viewpoint between the mother and daughter, it imparts a mysterious quality to the film’s conception of time and space. The Eternal Daughter, a kind of ghost film, stars Tilda Swinton who plays both mother and daughter, transitioning with tremendous agility from one character to the other throughout the film, leaving viewers captivated.
Istanbul Modern Cinema’s opening program takes its name from director Burak Çevik’s new film Forms of Forgetting, making its world premiere at the 73rd Berlinale Film Festival and detailing the remembrance process of a couple coming together after a 14-year separation.
