Sympathisanten.” This was how the sympathizers of left-wing terrorism and its ideologies were branded in Germany during the 1970s. Amongst these so-called sympathizers were many intellectuals like Heinrich Böll, the Nobel Prize winning author from Cologne, musicians, academicians, film directors and publishers. They were extremely vocal about their support for “the struggle for political independence”, and for quite some time. After a while, guns came into play; they began capturing people and partaking in guerilla activities, and people started dying. The RAF (Red Army Fraction) went underground. Director Felix Moeller depicts the story of a period filled with emotion as well as the story of his own family through personal documents and conversations with her mother Margarethe von Trotta, the famous director, and his stepfather Volker Schlöndorff.
