Winner of the Best Direction Award at the festival,Stepneis a quiet drama that explores the alienation between people in post-Soviet society. Returning home to his village to care for his dying mother, Anatoliy meets his brother, a contrasting character, and the woman he loves, and examines his past and his life. His mother also tells him about a buried treasure before her death. Looking at the relationship between land and memory through Anatoliy, the film also portrays with a documentary approach a generation of people who have quietly suppressed history. Stepne particularly impresses with its cinematography of the winter landscape.
