SATAN’S BREW (SATANSBRATEN), 1976 |
The crisis of identity, life and creativity of a poet who started out on the left wing, then began to interest himself in politics, lost his utopia and now believes he is Stefan George (1868-1933), the famous German poet and translator. While Fassbinder criticizes the unbroken and never-doubting loyalty to the ideals of the generation of 1968, his fear of the vacuum left by the loss of left-wing utopian dreams is also reflected on the story. Although Fassbinder calls it a comedy, this is one of his most bitter, aggressive, despairing and hence most personal works.
