Oscar-nominated director Walter Salles tells the true story of Eunice Paiva during Brazil's military dictatorship. In 1971, former member of parliament Rubens Paiva is detained and disappears. His wife Eunice is left alone with their five children and wages a struggle against the regime while trying to keep her family alive. Based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva's memoir, the film balances personal and political elements as it follows Eunice's transformation as a mother as well as an activist and a lawyer. Fernanda Torres' recent Golden Globe-winning performance makes this moving story—which takes place across many years—particularly poignant.
