FORMS OF FORGETTING (UNUTMA BİÇİMLERİ), 2023 |
Erdem (Şenocak) and Nesrin (Uçarlar), a couple separated for 14 years, find themselves attempting to recollect their past relationship and the reasons for its dissolution. Throughout the film, their present-day memories interweave with past declarations and even dreams. Meanwhile, the director seeks to recall something else through images from his own mental archive and through the memory imbued in the places he films. By observing the remnants of a deserted building, peering through a hole bored into the center of a frozen lake, or perhaps scanning a dark room with a flashlight, the film strives to find something it has lost. Utilizing the creative power of oblivion, Çevik evokes an abstract and nostalgic sentiment as he continues his pursuit to comprehend the essence of cinema itself, somewhere in the depths.
Istanbul Modern Cinema’s opening program takes its name from director Burak Çevik’s new film Forms of Forgetting, making its world premiere at the 73rd Berlinale Film Festival and detailing the remembrance process of a couple coming together after a 14-year separation.
