This film's turning point dates back to the 40th birthday celebrations of Empress Elisabeth of Austria during Christmas in 1877. Following these celebrations, Elisabeth, whose role has become increasingly ceremonial, cannot accept the idea of fading away and finally decides to break free from her chains. Her restlessness leads her to embark on a journey from England to Bavaria under the pretext of healing. She seduces her former lovers, creates legends about herself and tries to break free with the help of her faithful maid of honor. Vicky Krieps won the “Best Performance” award at Cannes for her flawless portrayal of a fragile yet fierce, delicate yet powerful empress, known for her beauty and tight corsage, but who is in a state of rebellion due to her hunger for knowledge and life.
