Beloved Sisters / Die geliebten Schwestern, 2014
Director: Dominik Graf
Color, 140',DCP
The latest film of seasoned director Dominik Graf competed for the Golden Bear in this year’s Berlinale, and has been selected as Germany’s nominee for Best Film in a Foreign Language in the 87th Academy Awards to be held next year. Set at the end of the 18th century, the film is based on the true love story between the famous poet and writer Friedrich Schiller and the von Lengefeld sisters, Charlotte and Caroline. Through this love triangle, the film draws parallels between the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment and the present day, and despite being a period drama, it treats the subject matter with a modern touch, earning Graf particular praise for his effective direction.
Note: The 140-minute cut of the film will be screened, which is also the version commercially released in Germany.
