m depicts the story of a young, queer generation battling suicide and drug abuse in Medellín, known as Colombia’s “open wound” and the drug cartel of Pablo Escobar. We see Montoya during the pre-production process of his first film, a dystopian B-movie starring ghosts. The name “Anhell69” comes from the Instagram account of Camilo Najar, the 21-year-old lead actor who sadly died from a heroin overdose. Like many of the director’s friends, he also died before the film’s shooting. Anhell69 is the dark exploration of a nation “killing its children,” but it’s also a trans film: not just because it’s about trans people, but also because it blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction. With its neo-noir and gothic aesthetics, it’s a cinematic act that inspires with its every moment, its strong political stance, and its deep emotion.
