ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED, 2022 |
Academy Award-winning Laura Poitras takes cult photographer Nan Goldin on a journey through her photographs, while also offering a lesson on how art can serve as a political intervention. The film, which came back from the Venice Film Festival with a Golden Lion award, interweaves two distinct stories with incredible authenticity: Goldin’s traumatic family history, her circle of friends in New York, her career that turned her into one of the most important photographers of the 20th century, and the protests she carried out in major art museums along with P.A.I.N., the activist group she founded. These protests are directed against the Sackler family, a giant pharmaceutical company responsible for the opioid epidemic that has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in the United States. The documentary, while instilling hope in what the power of art can achieve, touches the audience with its emotional narrative.
Istanbul Modern Cinema’s opening program takes its name from director Burak Çevik’s new film Forms of Forgetting, making its world premiere at the 73rd Berlinale Film Festival and detailing the remembrance process of a couple coming together after a 14-year separation.
