A young girl named Katy Tippel moves to Amsterdam with her impoverished family in the late 19th century and is led into prostitution in order to survive. In the process she sees the corrupting influence of money as she learns how to climb the ladder of life. Based on the memoirs of Neel Doff (1858-1942), a socialist author and artist, A Girl Called Katy Tippel is widely regarded as one of Verhoeven’s most important films.
