Emily Atef’s new film, which competed for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, depicts the story of a legendary interview, which was published in the Stern magazine in 1981. Famous actress Romy Schneider relocates to a rehab clinic in Quiberon, and accepts to be interviewed by Stern magazine despite her bad experiences with the German media. Her acceptance also has to do with the fact that, Robert Lebeck whom she has known and trusted for a long time will be taking the photographs for the interview. Schneider’s close friend Hilde also comes to Quiberon while young journalist Michael Jürgs and Lebeck are there to interview the actress. Schneider’s vulnerabilities resurface as the interview questions steer around her career with its ups and downs and the problems she has suffered in her private life during the last few years. The film uses black and white footage to portray Romy Schneider’s grace and melancholy, and incorporates these images with the outstanding performance by Marie Bäumer, a dead-ringer for the famous actress.
