The "History of Modern and Contemporary Art in Türkiye" seminar, led by expert art historians, examines the chronological development of art in Türkiye, beginning with the Westernization efforts of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century and continuing into the 20th century. Beginning with the Late Ottoman and Early Republican eras, the program examines the developments of the contemporary art scene, artists, artworks, exhibitions, and institutions in Türkiye after the 1950s in detail.
The first five seminars, led by Assoc. Prof. Ebru Nalan Sülün, delve into topics such as the social and artistic effects of the Industrial Revolution across East-West dynamics, international exhibitions and fairs, the Orientalist period, and the influence of art scenes on various artistic movements. It also discusses the development of architecture, painting, and sculpture fields during the Early Republican Period, while examining the relationship between the state and art, exhibitions, institutional innovations, and the development of the art scene during the same period.
The final five lectures of the program are led by Lecturer Seda Yavuz. Delving into the shifting and transforming aspects of art, artists, and art institutions in Türkiye from 1950 to the present day, the seminars scrutinize the layered dimensions of art as a practice.
