Albert Bitran, 1929-2018

Studio, 1959

Albert Bitran went to Paris in 1949 to study architecture. There, he met artists from the Paris School, whose international character ensured that it was the most important influence on the city’s post World War II art scene. Influenced by these artists’ aesthetic investigations of color and geometry, Bitran abandoned architecture and devoted himself to abstract painting. After some time Bitran moves away from repetitive geometric forms and begins creating works that are considered lyrical abstract by developing a distinctive language with an expressionist attitude during the later years of his career. The artist works on more than one work at a time, and his canvases have a multi-layered structure. The artist creates abstractions and spatial textures related to the stain by making use of the texture of the canvas in her paintings. With a special interest in works on paper, the artist continues his art practice by focusing on the technique of lithography in the mid-1950s and on engraving during the 1960s.
