GÜLSÜN KARAMUSTAFA A SELECTION
The programme is comprised of a selection of video works including The Stairway, Men Crying, Memory of Square and Unawarded Performances by prominent Turkish contemporary artist Gülsün Karamustafa. Her subjects and visual language bring an unconventional perspective to the 20th century contemporary Turkish art. Her video work titled The Stairway is based on a short story of four Romanian boys who play the accordion on the Kamonodo staircase which was built by an eminent banking family in Galata, in the 19th century. On Men Crying, she invites famed Turkish film director Atıf Yılmaz as guest director along with renowned actors of the Turkish cinema to perform unprecedented roles. Normally, viewed concurrently on three adjacent screens, Memory of Square, in this programme will be screened back-to-back. Focusing on the relationship between public and private space, Memory of Square juxtaposes life in an apartment building facing Taksim Square vis-a-vis the history of the public square itself. The video work Unawarded Performances is a study of Gagauz women from Moldavia in lstanbul, who are often employed as caretakers for the elderly.
