WINGS OF DESIRE (DER HIMMEL UBER BERLIN), 1987
Germany | DCP, Black and White & Color, 128’ | German, English, French
Director: Wim Wenders
Cast: Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin, Otto Sander
Two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, glide through the Berlin skies, listening to the thoughts of the inhabitants below. Damiel becomes captivated by the trapeze artist Marion’s vulnerabilities and concerns about her life, prompting him to make regular visits to the circus where she works. However, in order to truly feel, he must become human. The film invites its audience to a dream-like world while depicting Germany two years before the fall of the Berlin Wall, as it grapples with its past and its people filled with existential questions. The film will be screened in a restored 4K quality copy.
Inspired by the women artists in the exhibition "Always Here", Istanbul Modern Cinema continues its "Mind the Gap" project, which aims to raise awareness about gender inequality in the film industry. The focus of the new event will be on production design and art direction, in which the lack of women is felt severely in the film industry.
