UNDINE

UNDINE, 2020
Germany, France | HDD, Color, 91’ | German, English
Director: Christian Petzold
Cast: Paula Beer, Franz Rogowski, Maryam Zaree

Following three period films (Barbara, Phoenix, Transit), director Christian Petzold returns to contemporary Berlin and reinterprets the legend of the water spirit Undine, a mythological figure who kills a man who cheats on her. Undine, who is an art historian working for the city museum in the film, represents all the women who have been trapped within history until today. By questioning history itself, the film proves that the concept of love has changed, just like Berlin, through this love story that is both stylish and elegant. Undine returned from Berlinale with an award from the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) as well as the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
