Daniel Plainview is an oil prospector whose company is located in South California during the early twentieth century. Extremely greedy, Plainview quickly grows his business and his wealth after purchasing the rights to drill farms and lands owned by locals. Upon getting a tip, Plainview goes to a small town, and meets a local preacher who is as greedy as him. The meeting of these two individuals who represent the two biggest devices of exploitation, money and religion, will instigate a ruthless fight and cause the destruction of everything they value one by one. Adapted from Upton Sinclair’s novel titled Oil!, published in 1927 and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson for the silver screen, the film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won Daniel Day-Lewis his second Academy Award for Best Actor.
