The film was inspired by Pieter Brueghel’s 1564 painting "The Procession to Calvary", in which the Renaissance painter set the theme of Christ carrying the cross in a Flemish landscape. Featuring vignettes of the momentary situations of a dozen characters from among the close to five hundred figures depicted in Brueghel’s work, the film takes place entirely inside the painting’s unusual world. The Mill and the Cross premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.
