South Korean auteur director Park Chan-wook was nominated for the Golden Palm at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival with The Handmaiden, which is an erotic thriller set in 1930s Japanese-occupied Korea. The film revolves around a relationship that is full of schemes, featuring a young wealthy Japanese woman, a Korean con man attempting to deceive her to rob her fortune, and the Korean handmaiden he recruits. With its captivating plot, playful directorship that wrongfoots its audience at every turn, and aesthetics enhanced by stunning set designs, meticulous locations, and luxurious costumes, Handmaiden is a mesmerizing watch.

The focus of the new event will be on production design and art direction, in which the lack of women is felt severely in the film industry.
