Brett Sprague is released on parole after having served time in prison for assault; he returns home where his mother, two brothers, and girlfriend await him. The family gets together around Brett. But Brett’s violent tendencies lead him and his family to destruction. The film, in which Toni Collette’s performance as Brett’s girlfriend Michelle makes a strong impression, reveals a lower-class family’s struggle for survival in the Australian suburbs through the concepts of class, gender, and family.
