Miyazaki's autobiographical film is set during the World War II. Having lost his mother, Mahito moves to the countryside with his father. Playing near an abandoned tower, he befriends a gray heron. Featuring striking compositions and vivid colors, the film illustrates that Miyazaki is at the top of his powers visually. The Boy and the Heron, possibly the last film we will see from one of cinema's greatest artists, was completed in seven years, and was awarded “Best Animated Feature” at this year's Academy Awards.
