THE BABY OF MÂCON, 1993

Netherlands, France, UK | Blu-ray, Color, 122’ | English
Director: Peter Greenaway
Cast: Julia Ormond, Ralph Fiennes, Philip Stone

Peter Greenaway's provocative film is set in a medieval village torn by plague. The birth of a beautiful baby boy is greeted with joy, but his impassioned 17-year-old sister declares herself his mother and defies the church. The film is a striking exploration of the corruption of human nature and religion. Presented in a three-act structure with impressive cinematography by Sacha Vierny and elaborate set design, the story is full of shocking visuals and deals with such themes as murder, rape, and blasphemy. The film focuses more on visual power, achieved largely through the use of red, than narrative.

*The sexual / violent content in some of the scenes in this film may disturb some viewers.
