The film was inspired by the life of famous Cossack leader Stenka Razin, a figure in Russian folklore known for rising against the Tsar and his bureaucrats. The head of a gang of brigands who live along the Volga River and in the forests that border it, Stenka Razin falls in love with a beautiful Persian princess who is their captive. Displeased about this love, the gang contrives a nefarious plot to get rid of the princess and win back the attention of their leader.
