REMAKE, REMIX, RIP-OFF:ABOUT COPY CULTURE & TURKISH POP CINEMA (MOTÖR:KOPYA KÜLTÜRÜ VE POPÜLER TÜRK SİNEMASI), 2015

Turkey | DCP, Color, 96’ | Turkish

Director: Cem Kaya

This first feature-length documentary by Cem Kaya depicts the Turkish Yeşilçam film industry of the 1960s-1970s and the craze for copies and remakes of Hollywood movies. From an E.T. called Badi who eats Turkish delights to a Jonathan Harker called Azmi who goes to Dracula’s castle holding his prayer beads, this documentary brings together segments from the Turkish versions of many western films such as The Exorcist, Dracula, and Tarzan. The documentary is further enriched by interviews Kaya conducted in Istanbul with the period’s most speedy directors, most practical cameramen, and most dauntless actors, to take a closer look at Turkey’s curious and tumultuous history of filmmaking.

Some material in this film is not suitable for viewers under the age of 18. Thank you for your understanding.
