NATIONAL GALLERY, 2014
France, USA, UK | DCP, Color, 180’ | English
Director: Frederick Wiseman
Frederick Wiseman’s National Gallery is set entirely inside the museum of the same name in London. The film takes the audience on a journey behind the scenes of this London institution. In the film, we embark on a journey to the heart of Western masterpieces from a period of time spanning from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century. “National Gallery” is as much the portrait of a place as it is a documentary revealing an institution’s way of working and its relations with the world, its staff, its visitors, and its artworks. In this perpetual and dizzying world of mirrors, the film watches the works and the works watch the film. Wiseman takes a comprehensive look at this nearly 200-year-old museum.
