MİMAROĞLU: THE ROBINSON OF MANHATTAN ISLAND (MİMAROĞLU), 2020
Turkey, U.S.A | HDD, Color, 76’ | Turkish, English
Director: Serdar Kökçeoğlu
This first documentary about İlhan Mimaroğlu, one of the pioneers of electronic music history, who passed away in 2012, has a multi-layered structure. An artist who has worked with numerous artists such as Federico Fellini, Freddie Hubbard and Charles Mingus, Mimaroğlu also produced music with an avant-garde and political attitude, undertaken the production of legendary albums for Atlantic Records since the 1970s, while writing criticism, taking photographs and shooting films. With its experimental narrative, the documentary both fictionalizes images and music from Mimaroğlu's personal archive, and tells a drama through Güngör Mimaroğlu, who is the other leading character of this whole story, and İlhan Mimaroğlu’s life partner, who migrated to New York in the 1960s. Mimaroglu:The Robinson of Manhattan Island made its world premiere at the 2020 Visions du Réel Film Festival.
