MEAN STREETS, 1973

USA | DCP, Color, 112’ | English
Director: Martin Scorsese
Cast: Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, David Proval

This stylized gangster film set in New York’s Little Italy was defined by Roger Ebert as “a reference point for contemporary cinema.” Harvey Keitel stars as Charlie, who struggles with Catholic guilt, and Robert De Niro as Johnny Boy, who has violent tendencies. Mean Streets, in which Scorsese underscores the themes of violence, moral conflict, and redemption in the story through the strategic use of color and snorricam, particularly in the bar scenes, continues to offer a fresh cinema experience 51 years later.
