Elizabeth is preparing to star in a film about Gracie whose life after her marriage to a 13-year-old boy caused a scandal years ago. To research her role, she visits Gracie and her family’s home to observe them and try to understand the essence of their relationship. Director Todd Haynes draws on the aesthetics of soap operas, refraining from taking a moral stance on Gracie and Joe's relationship, instead encouraging the audience to reflect.
