MAN OF ARAN

MAN OF ARAN

In his first sound feature, Robert Flaherty, the pioneer of nonfiction film, exploreshumankind’s relationship with nature, a theme he had dealt within his two previous films, Nanook of the North and Moana. Flaherty shot Man of Aran over a period of two years on the Aran Islands, west of Ireland's Galway Bay. The “family” in the film is composed of three people. Portraying the everyday life of three people struggling to fish among the barren islands despite the waves of the Atlantic constantly crashing on the shore, the film poetically depicts their daily routine and the inescapable role nature plays in the lives of these people.
