17 year-old Maya lives with her family on a coffee plantation at the foot of an active volcano. As she is set to be married to the farm forearm, she dreams of going to the other side of the mountain by seducing a coffee-harvester who wants to escape to the USA. When things don’t go as planned, Maya rediscovers both her own world and the Kaqchikel Maya culture to which she belongs. Ixcanul is an unusual and moving woman’s story based on the life of a real person.
