Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary... Or Modeselektor, one of today's most successful electronic music groups. The German group, which gained international attention after Thom Yorke provided vocals on some of their songs, has reached countless people around the world with their studio albums and legendary live performances, and has created remixes for many important musicians and groups, from Björk to Radiohead. Modeselektor, who also came to Istanbul for a concert a few years ago, has a fan base in our country as well. This documentary, directed by Romi Agel and Holger Wick, begins with Bronsert and Szary, who grew up in East Germany, discovering techno in post-reunification Germany and learning to make music on their own in the countryside, and continues all the way to their current great success. “We Are Modeselektor” thus does not merely recount the group’s history; it also traces the evolution of electronic music’s growing popularity in Germany since the 1990s, as well as Berlin’s transformation into a mecca for the creators and consumers of this emerging culture. Videos and photos from Bronsert and Szary’s own archives offer fascinating details about 90s club culture, while Modeselektor’s concert footage, backstage moments, and interviews with the group’s inner circle are also featured in the documentary. Other renowned electronic music artists like Apparat and Ellen Allien also appear on camera.
