Following a father and daughter who reunite after 20 years, the film is set in a farmhouse in the photogenic region of Castile. The main character, Luis, is writing an autobiographical novel which in effect mostly consists of his fantasies about the life of his daughter Elisa. This time Saura tries new narrative possibilities via stories told through monologues, dreams, wish fulfillment, and multiple view points, and turns the film into a sort of puzzle with cross-cuts between reality and fantasy and musical and literary references.
