BABYGIRL (LA HEMBRITA), 2023
Dominican Republic| DCP, Color, 92’ | Spanish
Director: Laura Amelia Guzmán
Cast: Cecilia Garcia, Cuquín Victoria, Juan Maria Almonte
Living in an affluent neighborhood, middle-aged Dominique feels lonely as her children grow up and leave home. When her granddaughter, brought home one day by her maid, suddenly disappears, Dominique's maternal instinct is reawakened. From the very first scene, the film explores Dominique's privileged position and hidden desires, offering a sensitive and well-crafted observation of the society of the Dominican Republic, with a nod to Lucrecia Martel's The Headless Woman (2008).
