Andrei Tarkovsky’s film about the life of the 15th-century medieval painter Andrei Rublev meticulously depicts the Russian Middle Ages. Showing how artists were affected by religion, political ambiguity and a repressive regime, the film draws the portrait of a historical character to take a critical look at the Russia of the period. Filmed in 1969, Andrei Rublev won the FIPRESCI prize at the Cannes Film Festival but was only released in 1971 in the Soviet Union after undergoing censorship.
