ANATOMY OF A FALL (ANATOMIE D’UNE CHUTE), 2023
France | DCP, Color, 150’ | French
Director: Justine Triet
Cast: Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado-Graner
Winner of this year’s Golden Palm at Cannes, the film is a somber and powerful courtroom drama that delves into the intricacies of a marriage. It is a thriller following Sandra, a successful writer accused of murdering her husband, who is found dead in front of their home in the French Alps. Successfully avoiding the legal system’s quest for the truth and moral absolutes, the film reveals conflicting egos, jealousies, and traumas within this relationship. The couple’s 11-year-old blind son serves as the primary witness in this trial. Triet paints a psychologically rich portrait of a woman through her feminist touch, with Hüller topping off the character with her captivating performance.
Inspired by the women artists in the exhibition "Always Here", Istanbul Modern Cinema continues its "Mind the Gap" project, which aims to raise awareness about gender inequality in the film industry. The focus of the new event will be on production design and art direction, in which the lack of women is felt severely in the film industry.
