AKIRA, 1988

AKIRA, 1988

Japan | DCP, Color, 124’ | Japanese
Director: Katsuhiro Ôtomo

Regarded as one of the most important films in the history of anime, the film depicts the destruction of Tokyo in 1988 and the rise of a dangerous megapolis named Neo-Tokyo following the Third World War. In this dystopian world ruled by motorcycle gangs, a young motorcyclist meets a strange boy, and things quickly get complicated. Adapted from the cult manga of the same name by Katsuhiro Ôtomo, Akira presents a critical take on the reconstruction of Japan after the war. The red in Akira emphasizes the intense energy and destructive power of the film, and the illustration is equally impressive.
