Ryota is a father whose actual profession is writing but it has been 15 years since he wrote his novel and his “muses” have deserted him together with his self-esteem. When Ryota, who gambles away every cent he earns, realizes that his beautiful ex-wife is building a new life for herself, he decides he will try to become a good father again. One night a strong storm hits, stranding him at his mother’s apartment with his ex-wife and son and giving the entire family the opportunity to confront the past and their current situation. Palme d’Or-winning veteran director Hirokazu Kore-Eda’s After the Storm was screened in competition in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.
