Istanbul Museum of Modern Art offers an art-filled program for children during the term break. From November 11 to 15, children ages 7 to 10 will explore and interpret artworks alongside museum educators and participate in workshops where they will produce their own artistic creations.
In the first session of the Term Break Art School workshops, children will explore select artworks from the museum’s collection. They will then dive into examples from art history, finishing the program by creating their own original pieces.
Each workshop in the Term Break Art School will focus on different concepts in art and various methods of artistic production. Participants can register for one or all of the workshops by selecting their respective dates. Istanbul Modern will award a Term Break Art School Participation Certificate to those who attend at least five of the ten workshops available!

Important Notice: Exhibition visits will not be organized on Mondays. In the workshops covering the exhibition visit, artworks related to the subject will be discussed. It is recommended that children attend all workshop programs in comfortable clothing. Children will wear Istanbul Modern aprons during the painting workshops.

What does figure mean? What does figurative painting mean? What are the characteristics of modern figurative painting?
The program focuses on helping children visually and audibly define the concept of figure. After a short presentation on figurative art, children interpret some artworks from the museum's collection. In the workshop, children complete their figurative paintings by creating silhouettes through templates inspired by the images in the artworks.

What is a landscape? What is a scenery? How have artists interpreted their environment and nature?
In this program, children explore the relationship between humans, their environment, and nature through examples from art history. The workshop begins with a short presentation where children interpret how contemporary artists address the topic of landscape, followed by a gallery visit to examine some artworks from the museum's collection. Inspired by the contemporary art examples they interpret, children complete the workshop by creating paintings using collage and watercolor techniques.

Can both science and art be done at the same time? How do observation and experiment transform into art?
The program focuses on exploring the relationship between science and art through the microscopic images of organisms that we cannot see with the naked eye. The workshop begins with a presentation featuring the works of artists who utilize different fields of science in their productions. In the workshop, where images of various biological forms captured with a microscope will be projected and examined, children create drawings based on the natural forms they observe.

November 12, 2024 | Tuesday, 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM
How is a sculpture made? What ready-made objects might artists use in their sculptures?
The program focuses on the use of ready-made objects in contemporary art production. Children begin the workshop with a brief presentation on the history of sculpture and types of production. After interpreting the sculpture works in the museum's collection exhibition, the children create small sculptures by painting and assembling used cardboard tubes that have lost their original purpose.

When were the first city paintings created? How have modern and contemporary artists portrayed the cities they live in?
The program focuses on the concept of the city, inviting children to think about the historical and cultural features of their city through art. After watching a presentation on paintings depicting cityscapes in art history, children examine and interpret artworks inspired by the city from the museum's collection. In the workshop, children create three-dimensional city paintings by layering photo block materials and completing them with stylized drawings.

What does portrait mean? How does our face reflect our emotions? How have artists expressed themselves in their self-portraits?
The program begins with a short game in which children imitate facial expressions and bring their emotions to life. Following a presentation featuring self-portraits by artists using different forms of art, such as painting, sculpture, installation, and video art, children interpret some works from the museum's collection exhibition. The program concludes with children creating self-portraits using the images they design.

What does abstract painting mean? What is the difference between lyrical abstract and geometric abstract painting?
The program focuses on abstract paintings, where artists express their emotions and ideas through colors and shapes without the concern of resembling any familiar objects or figures. After a short presentation on the history of abstract painting, children interpret and compare abstract works in the museum's collection. In the workshop, children complete the program by creating lyrical and geometric abstract artworks that differentiate through their production techniques.

What is design? What are the fundamental principles of art and design?
The program focuses on developing costume design ideas inspired by art history. In the workshop, children watch a presentation featuring examples from art history, evaluating the periods and costumes in the paintings. In this workshop, children design a costume for a figure by creating patterns with colors, lines, and stains on specially designed paper templates. They then complete the workshop by creating a drawing of a figure wearing this costume.

How is stain used in art? How is line formed? What kinds of artworks can be created with stains and lines?
The program, focusing on fundamental concepts of art such as line, stain, and texture, invites children into the world of abstract painting. Starting with the interpretation of exemplary artworks from art history, the workshop concludes with children creating impromptu stains using watercolor techniques and designing patterns with lines of different characters.

How can we paint a city from different perspectives? What do we encounter on street walls?
The program invites children to explore how artists from the past to the present have depicted the places they have lived or visited. In the workshop, children watch a short presentation about artists inspired by urban streets. After interpreting the artworks in the museum's collection exhibition, the children create collage paintings that evoke city walls by crumpling, tearing, and folding paper, inspired by contemporary art practices.
