Summer Art School

Istanbul Museum of Modern Art offers an art-filled program for children during the summer holiday. Within the scope of this program, which will take place between July 9 and August  23, 2024, children between the ages of 7 and 10 can study artworks together with museum educators and participate in workshops where they create artistic productions.

The workshops begin with an examination of some of the artworks in the exhibitions, and the children discover examples from art history and complete the program by producing artworks.

Each workshop in the Summer Art School education program focuses on different concepts of art and various methods of production. The workshops are held every weekday, with a repetition cycle that continues throughout the summer.

The program focuses on the concept of shadow and light in contemporary artworks. Children begin the program with a short presentation on how artists have dealt with light and shadow in photography, film, and animation. They will then examine and interpret some of the artworks in the museum's temporary exhibition. In the workshop, children will create shadow paintings using oil baking paper and cardboard. The program begins with the children describing the concept of figure audio visually. What is scenery? What is landscape? How did the artists interpret their environment and nature?
In the workshop, children explore the relationship between humans and nature with examples from the history of art. The program begins with the children interpreting landscape photographs taken from different angles. Children evaluate how contemporary artists have handled the subject of landscape. Inspired by the examples of contemporary art examined in the museum’s collection exhibition, the children then complete the workshop with their own artworks produced with the techniques of collage and watercolor.

Can one engage in science and art at the same time? How do observation and experimentation transform into art?
Microscopic images of living things that we cannot see with the naked eye are of interest to art as well as science. In the workshop, images of different biological forms taken with a micro-camera will be reflected on the screen for examination. The children will then create their artworks based on the forms they observe.

What is monochrome? What do different shades of the same color look like when they come together?
The workshop invites children to explore colors and the relationships between color tones. After examining the monochrome artworks in the museum's collection exhibition, the children produce colors in the workshop. They then create compositions that create a sense of depth by combining the colors they have produced.
