Pae White, 1963

Born in California in 1963, Pae White completed her graduate degree in 1991 at the Art Center College of Design. In her work, White suspends colored pieces of paper by thin threads from the ceiling, dividing the space into distinct areas by grouping together similary tied, knotted and suspended material. The strategic planning and design of her works constitute the draft for her practice.

In “Northern Smoke”, White interweaves modern digital technology and ancient art of tapestry. This piece is avision of an ephemeral moment suspended as the fluidity of smoke is caught, trapped, in a still and stable image. Though this work was processed industrially, the strong, historic relationship between the human body and the art of tapestry gives the piece a human quality. The act of weaving, which in historical terms means patience, order, and effort, becomes monumental when stretched to such huge dimensions.
