Born in 1971 in Zara, Nuri Kuzucan graduated from Mimar Sinan University, Fine Arts Department, and received his master’s degree from the Institute of Social Sciences.
Producing works on architecture and cities, Kuzucan explores on canvas the concept of modernity and modern architecture. He generally depicts multilayered urban landscapes in abstract geometric forms. His complex lines in close-up drawings of buildings or bird’s-eye view of cities offer viewers a different lens for viewing the inorganic world they live in. Through his diverse perspectives, Kuzucan also draws attention to the solitude the modern world creates for human beings and succeeds, from time to time, in transforming the viewer from outside witness into a figure within the whole. Through the dichotomies of interior and exterior, near and far, and detail and whole, he changes and transforms perceptions as he does architectural units.
In his work “Exterior” from the series “Interior & Exterior” we see mostly sterile and frigid structures. In this work, rather than luring viewers in using color, Kuzucan chooses to place them at a distance as mere witnesses and thus asks them to reflect on this attitude.
