Brazilian director, known for Neighboring Sounds and Aquarius, returns with a witty and playful documentary about his love for cinema and the city of Recife, where he discovered it. Pictures of Ghosts uses both present-day footage and archive material, including photographs, news reports, home recordings, and excerpts from the director's films. It freely explores architecture, urban regeneration, genre cinema, and the relationship between the Nazis and film distribution in Brazil, intertwining fiction and documentary. "Fiction films are the best documentaries,” says the director, reminding us that both making and watching films is a collective and magical experience.
