Untitled, 2011

Born in 1974 in İstanbul, Ebru Uygun studied painting at Marmara University between 1993 and 1994 before going to the UK to study art and design at Kingston University and illustration at the University of Brighton.

Uygun’s works comprise contradictions that complement one another. Her painting practice involves activities that are thought of as sculptural: she not only paints with but scrapes at he paint, and tears and cuts the canvas. She then arbitrarily glues these cut-out pieces to form collages made of pieces of canvas. She also records the sounds of these cutting and tearing interventions, and manipulates traces of paint spilled unintentionally on the floor to include them in the painting. Working with four separate unstretched pieces of canvas, Uygun deforms, fragments, and then reassembles them on a single surface. Pieces of thread and glue residue and textural diversity to the background of the painting. He Works reflects various movements of the body through the use of sounds produced during the making process, and through traces of disjointed remnants on their surfaces. These elements contribute to the sensory character of the works.
